02What this is

A dedicated circuit is one branch circuit that serves one appliance and nothing else. Its own breaker in the panel, its own conductors, its own neutral, and no other outlets or lights sharing the run. That is the whole idea, and it is why a dedicated circuit fixes problems that swapping a breaker never will.

Appliances need this for two reasons. The first is load: a compressor, a treadmill motor, a well pump, or an induction cooktop draws a large, sustained current, and motors pull several times their running current for the first moment they start. Put that on a circuit shared with the kitchen lights and you get a breaker that trips at the worst moment — which is the breaker doing its job correctly. The second reason is code. Current California code requires a number of fixed appliances to be on their own circuit; in a kitchen remodel the dishwasher and the disposal are the ones that come up most. Rather than recite a list here, we check your specific appliances against the code in force when we pull the permit.

On an existing home the job is rarely about the appliance. It is about two questions: does your panel have the capacity and a place to land a new breaker, and can we get a route from that panel to where the appliance actually sits. Those answers look different in a 1940s bungalow with plaster and lath and no attic above the kitchen than they do in a tract home with an open garage ceiling. Hillside foundations with no crawl access, detached garages across a driveway, and second-story destinations are the routes other shops quote around. Those are the ones we are set up for. You can pressure-test the capacity half yourself with the Panel Load Calculator before you call.

On scope: Sunrise holds a CSLB C-10 (Electrical) license, #C10-1097237, and the circuit, the breaker, the disconnect, and the connection are all in-house work. Two boundaries are worth stating plainly. For a heat pump or an air handler we run the circuit and set the disconnect while your HVAC contractor sets the equipment, because the equipment side is C-20 scope. For a water heater the plumbing and any gas line belong to a C-36 contractor. We coordinate with either one, and we say up front which parts of your project are ours.

04What's included

Exactly what we handle — and the two things you handle.

Sunrise provides

  • A load check at the panel before we commit to anything — open breaker slots, bus rating, and what your service is already carrying
  • A new breaker matched to your panel brand, which the panel's UL listing requires; Siemens is our default panel and breaker line, and the panel directory is updated and the new circuit labeled so the next person knows what it feeds
  • Conductors sized to the appliance nameplate and the length of the run, in the cable or raceway the location calls for
  • The run itself — attic, crawlspace, garage wall, or exterior conduit where an interior route does not exist
  • A receptacle or a hardwired connection to match the appliance, plus a disconnect where one is required at the equipment
  • GFCI or AFCI protection on the new circuit where current California code requires it for that location
  • Building permit pulled and inspection coordinated, built into the quote rather than added later
Warranty: 20-year workmanship warranty — see warranty terms · Permits: pulled + inspection coordinated by us, built into the quote · Cleanup: Drop cloths down before we open anything, drilling dust vacuumed as we go, offcuts and packaging hauled out. Where a run has to pass through finished plaster or drywall we cut in cleanly and leave the patching to a finish contractor — that is outside our scope and we will recommend someone.

You provide

  • The appliance nameplate or spec sheet — volts and amps — before the work day, because it sizes the conductor, the breaker, and the receptacle
  • Access to the panel, to the appliance location, and to the route between them: attic hatch clear, crawlspace reachable, garage floor walkable
  • Confirmation of exactly where the appliance will sit, since moving it two feet after the fact means opening the wall again
05How it works

Start to finish, with real times.

1Scheduled with you — we confirm the visit window when we book

Free home electrical inspection

A tech looks at your panel, at where the appliance will live, and at the route between the two. We read the nameplate against your existing service, tell you honestly whether the panel can carry it, and send a written scope and quote. No pressure to book anything on the spot.

2Lead time set when we book; permit timing varies by jurisdiction

Quote, permit, and scheduling

You get a written scope with the circuit size, the route, and what the finished connection looks like. We pull the building permit — with the County for unincorporated addresses, or with the city in Santa Cruz, Capitola, Scotts Valley, or Watsonville — and set the work day with you.

3Depends on the run — a short open route and a long fished run to a detached building are different jobs, and your written scope says which one yours is

Install day

Power off at the panel, breaker landed, conductors run and secured, box set, and the connection made at the appliance end. We test the circuit under load before we call it done, not just for continuity.

4Before we leave — we walk it with you rather than working to a clock

Inspection and walkthrough

We meet the inspector, then walk you through what was installed, show you the new breaker and its label, register the 20-year workmanship warranty, and leave you the invoice with the permit number and the sign-off.

06Pricing transparency

Every quote is free. The range depends too much on your home to fake it.

There is no single number for a dedicated circuit, because the appliance is the smallest part of the job. What you are paying for is the distance from your panel to the appliance and how hard that distance is to cross. A twenty-foot run along an open garage ceiling to a bench outlet and a sixty-foot run fished through a finished second story to a bedroom gym are the same circuit on paper and very different jobs in a house. We quote after we have seen both ends and the middle. If you want to know before we arrive whether your service can even carry what you are planning, the Panel Load Calculator runs the optional dwelling-unit load calculation against your actual loads and gives you a real answer.

Financing · GoGreen Home
Financing through GoGreen Home is available when a project qualifies. Qualification is tied to the energy-efficiency upgrade the circuit serves — an EV charger, a heat pump, a heat pump water heater, an induction range, or solar with battery — rather than to the circuit itself. A workshop or well-pump circuit on its own is a different situation. We walk through your specific pathway at quote instead of guessing at it here, and you see a real figure only once the scope is set.

Quotes are free. The variance on this work is too wide for an honest range — book a free inspection and we’ll give you a real number for your specific home, in writing.
What moves the number
Distance from the panel to the appliance, and how much of that distance passes through finished space rather than open attic or crawl · 120V or 240V, and the amperage the nameplate calls for — conductor size is the single largest material variable · Whether the panel has an open slot, can take a tandem arrangement, or is genuinely full and needs a subpanel or a service upgrade first · Route conditions specific to older county housing stock: plaster and lath, low attic clearance, tight crawlspaces, and hillside foundations with no crawl access at all · Detached buildings — trenching, conduit, and whether one subpanel beats running three separate circuits across the yard · Coastal exposure near the shoreline, where exterior fittings and enclosures need corrosion-resistant selections · Building permit fees, which differ between unincorporated County and the four cities that run their own building departments · GFCI or AFCI protection required for the circuit type and location, which changes the device or breaker at one end
No hidden fees. Every quote is free and detailed.

09Frequently asked questions

7 questions. Real answers.

Pulled from what we actually hear on quotes and on-site. If yours isn't here, ask us — we'll answer in plain English.

What actually makes a circuit dedicated?
One breaker, one set of conductors, one appliance. Nothing else is connected to it — no other outlets, no lights, no shared neutral with a neighboring circuit. That exclusivity is the point. It means the appliance gets the full capacity of the breaker, and it means that when the breaker trips you know exactly what caused it.
Do I actually need one, or can you just put a bigger breaker in?
Never a bigger breaker on the same wire. The breaker is sized to protect the conductor, not the appliance — putting a larger one in lets the wire overheat before anything trips, which is how fires start. If a circuit keeps tripping under a real load, the honest answers are a dedicated circuit for the appliance or a repair to whatever fault is causing it. Our diagnostics service covers the second case.
What if my panel is full or too small?
That is common in county homes still on 100A service, and it changes the project rather than ending it. Two paths: a subpanel when the service has capacity but the panel is out of physical slots, or a 200-amp panel upgrade when the service itself is the limit. We tell you which one your house is, and we would rather show you the load calculation than assert it.
Do you have to open my walls?
Sometimes, and we will tell you before we start rather than after. Where there is attic above or crawlspace below the destination we can usually fish the run with one small opening at the box. Through a finished second story with fire blocking, expect access holes. We cut them cleanly and small; patching plaster or drywall is a finish trade and is not in our scope.
Can you run a circuit to a detached garage or shop?
Yes, and this is where it is worth pausing on the design. If the building needs one circuit, a single run is right. If it needs three — lights, bench outlets, and a compressor — the trench and the conduit are most of the cost either way, so a feeder and a small subpanel out there usually costs less than three separate runs and leaves you room to grow.
Is a permit required for a new circuit?
Adding a branch circuit is permitted work. We pull it and coordinate the inspection as part of the project, and the fee is in your quote rather than appearing later. For an unincorporated address — Aptos, Soquel, Live Oak, Felton, Corralitos and most of the county — that is the County building department. Only Santa Cruz, Capitola, Scotts Valley, and Watsonville run their own.
How long is the warranty?
20-year workmanship warranty on the installation, transferable to the next homeowner. See warranty terms for what is covered.
10Even if Sunrise isn't the answer

Here’s the honest path — wherever it leads.

We'd rather you get the right outcome than the Sunrise outcome. Some of this points away from us on purpose.

Outside Santa Cruz County?

Look for a CSLB-licensed C-10 contractor near you. Verify the license at cslb.ca.gov, ask for proof of general liability and workers-comp coverage, and ask whether the quote includes the permit. A new branch circuit is permitted work anywhere in California — anyone suggesting you skip that is cutting a corner you will inherit.
