Home EV charging is the most common project we do — and it's almost always paired with a panel-capacity conversation. The 48A Tesla Wall Connector + the 40A ChargePoint Home Flex + most other Level 2 chargers add a continuous load that older Santa Cruz panels weren't sized for. Sometimes the panel fits the new load; sometimes we need to upgrade first.

Will my panel support an EV charger?
Often yes for smaller chargers (16A or 32A), often no for the faster 48A chargers without a panel upgrade. The free inspection has a tech run the NEC load math and verify in person.
Tesla Wall Connector vs other Level 2 chargers — which should I pick?
We usually recommend the Tesla Universal Wall Connector. The Wall Connector charges at up to 48A. The Universal's built-in J1772 adapter means it charges any EV, Tesla or not. ChargePoint Home Flex + Wallbox have stronger app ecosystems. We're brand-neutral; we install whichever you pick. We'll discuss the tradeoffs at the free inspection.
How fast does Level 2 charging actually go?
48A Wall Connector delivers up to 11.5 kW — about 30 miles of range per hour for typical EVs. 40A chargers deliver about 25 miles/hour. 32A about 20 miles/hour. 16A about 10 miles/hour. Most people charge overnight, so even slower chargers cover daily driving.
Will the install affect my home insurance?
Not in a negative way. A properly-permitted EV charger install generally either has no impact or a slight positive impact (some carriers offer discounts). The permit + inspection are the key — DIY or unpermitted installs can create issues.
What about Level 1 charging — just plug into a regular outlet?
Works for daily driving if you don't drive much (Level 1 = 3-5 miles per hour of charging). Most customers eventually upgrade to Level 2 for charge speed + smart features. If you're testing the waters, Level 1 is free to start; we can install a proper Level 2 later.
