The Tesla Wall Connector is Tesla's home Level 2 charger — 48A continuous, supplying up to 11.5 kW, roughly 44 miles of range per hour on a Model 3 or Y. It comes in two versions, and the one we usually install is the Universal Wall Connector: the same unit with a built-in J1772 adapter, so it natively charges any EV sold in North America — Tesla, Ford, Chevy, Rivian, Kia, Hyundai, VW — today and through the industry's transition to the NACS connector.
The differences, plainly: the standard Wall Connector is NACS-only — the right choice when the household is all-Tesla and expects to stay that way, and it costs a bit less; non-Tesla EVs need an adapter to use it. The Universal adds the built-in J1772 side, so nothing in your driveway ever needs a dongle. Output range (8–48A continuous, 11.5 kW max), circuit requirements, and the install itself are identical either way — choosing between them changes nothing about the electrical work.
Installing a Wall Connector involves more than mounting the unit. The 48A continuous load needs a 60A circuit (the NEC 80% rule for continuous loads). That circuit has to come from a panel that can actually carry it — and many older Santa Cruz County panels can't without an upgrade. The wire gauge has to be right for the run length, because voltage drop matters at higher amperages over long runs. And the whole install needs to pass AHJ inspection.
We handle every part: panel-capacity check, permit pull, wire run, mounting, commissioning, and inspection coordination. You end up with a charger that works on day one and keeps working for the life of the install. It's what we chose for our own electric vans, and what the owner runs at home. A tech walks the panel, the proposed charger location, and the circuit run. Checks panel capacity, decides whether an upgrade is needed, and sends a written quote within 48 hours.
If panel capacity is fine, the install is scheduled within a few weeks. If a panel upgrade is needed, we sequence the panel work first so the charger lands on a service that can carry it.
We mount the Wall Connector, run the 60A circuit from the panel, terminate at the charger, register the unit with Tesla, and commission charging. AHJ inspection is coordinated the same day where possible.
