Tesla Wall Connector installation — Universal and standard

What this is
The Tesla Wall Connector is Tesla's home Level 2 charger — 48A continuous, supplying up to 11.5 kW. Tesla rates it at up to 44 miles of range per hour on vehicles that accept the full 48A; the rear-wheel-drive Model 3 and most Model Y trims are limited to 32A, which Tesla puts at about 30 miles per hour. It comes in two versions, and the one we usually install is the Universal Wall Connector: Tesla says it has both J1772 and NACS plugs and charges both Tesla vehicles and other electric vehicles.
The differences, plainly: Tesla says the standard Wall Connector has a NACS plug and only works with Tesla vehicles, so it suits a household that is all-Tesla and expects to stay that way, and it costs a bit less. For a non-Tesla EV, choose the Universal, which adds the J1772 plug. Tesla's installation manuals give both versions the same output range (12–48A, 11.5 kW max) and the same breaker table, so the circuit and the install itself are identical either way — choosing between them changes nothing about the electrical work.
Installing a Wall Connector involves more than mounting the unit. The 48A continuous load needs a 60A circuit (the NEC 80% rule for continuous loads). That circuit has to come from a panel that can actually carry it — and many older Santa Cruz County panels can't without an upgrade. The wire gauge has to be right for the run length, because voltage drop matters at higher amperages over long runs. And the whole install needs to pass a building-department inspection.

Do I need a Tesla to use the Wall Connector?
Not with the Universal Wall Connector: Tesla says it has both J1772 and NACS plugs and charges both Tesla vehicles and other electric vehicles. Tesla says the standard Wall Connector has a NACS plug and only works with Tesla vehicles, so for a non-Tesla EV, choose the Universal. Either way the circuit and the install are identical.
Will my existing panel support a 48A Wall Connector?
Sometimes yes, sometimes no. We run the panel-load calculation as part of the free inspection. If your panel is 200A and your other loads are typical, you're usually fine. On a 100A panel the answer is often no, and it's usually central air conditioning or electric cooking that decides it — we'd quote a panel upgrade alongside the Wall Connector install and sequence them right.
Can I install at a slower amperage to skip the panel upgrade?
Yes. The Wall Connector can be configured to charge at 32A or 16A instead of 48A — slower charging on a smaller circuit, with less panel headroom needed. Some homeowners do this as an interim step and upgrade the panel later. Worth doing the math at the quote.
How fast does the Wall Connector actually charge?
At full 48A it delivers up to 11.5 kW. Tesla's own table puts that at up to 44 miles of range per hour on a Model 3 or Y that accepts 48A — but the rear-wheel-drive Model 3 and most Model Y trims only take 32A, about 30 miles per hour, and other makes set their own limits. That's the top of the standard home Level 2 range, Universal or standard. DC fast charging is faster still, but that's road-trip infrastructure, not home equipment.
What's the warranty?
20-year workmanship warranty on our installation — see warranty terms. The Wall Connector unit itself carries Tesla's own 4-year warranty. We register both at install.
Can you install at my detached garage or ADU?
Yes, often. Longer runs mean heavier wire (a voltage-drop calculation), and sometimes a subpanel at the detached structure is the cleaner answer. We assess at the free inspection.
Do I need a permit?
Yes — every Santa Cruz County building department requires a permit for EV charger installation. We handle the permit and inspection coordination, and the cost is built into the quote.
