NACS — North American Charging Standard

NACS is the EV charging connector design Tesla developed and used exclusively until 2022, then opened to industry. Standardized as SAE J3400 in 2023. Compared to the prior J1772 (AC Level 1/2) + CCS1 (DC fast charge) two-connector system, NACS uses ONE connector for both AC home charging and DC fast charging, in a smaller, lighter form factor.
Major automakers signed on through 2023-2024: Ford, GM, Rivian, Volvo, Polestar, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Honda, Hyundai-Kia, BMW, Lucid, Toyota. New vehicle production with native NACS ports began rolling out in the 2025-2027 model-year window. Adapters are available for J1772/CCS1 vehicles to use NACS chargers, and vice versa.
Customers buying or planning to buy a 2025+ EV are increasingly getting NACS-native vehicles. Tesla Wall Connectors with NACS connectors charge those vehicles without adapters. Older J1772 chargers still work with adapters. We don't push customers to replace working chargers; we just talk through the right hardware for their actual + planned vehicle situation.
The transition is messy in 2026 — some new EVs ship with NACS native, some still ship J1772 with NACS adapters in the trunk. The Wall Connector buyer's question right now is "what do I drive now, what might I drive next, do I want NACS native or NACS+J1772 adapter." We walk through it on every install consult.
