Tesla Wall Connector

The Tesla Wall Connector is Tesla's home charging hardware — hardwired Level 2 EVSE, output adjustable from 8A to 48A continuous. Maximum 48A continuous = 11.5 kW = roughly 44 miles of range per hour on a Model 3/Y. It comes in two versions: the standard Wall Connector (NACS connector only) and the Universal Wall Connector, the same unit with a built-in J1772 adapter — so it natively charges any EV sold in North America, Tesla or not, today and as more manufacturers move to NACS.

NACS (North American Charging Standard) — the connector design Tesla uses — was standardized in 2023 (SAE J3400). Most non-Tesla EVs are transitioning to NACS through the 2025-2027 model years; the Universal version covers both sides of that transition without dongles.

The install is identical for both versions: hardwire to a dedicated 240V circuit (60A breaker for the full 48A continuous, sized at 125% per code), torque the lugs to spec, set the output to match the breaker.

We usually recommend the Universal Wall Connector — it's the best home charger we've installed regardless of what badge is on your car, and it doesn't lock your driveway to one brand. The standard version makes sense when the household is all-Tesla and expects to stay that way. Our most common installs are 48A on a 60A circuit; if your panel can't support 48A continuous once the load calculation is run, we install at 40A or 32A, or talk panel capacity — the hardware is the same either way. It's also what we chose for our own electric vans.
