What order should I electrify in?
There is a tidy theoretical answer to this and it is not very useful, because real sequences are set by a furnace failing in January or a car arriving in March. The decision that actually matters is made once, at the start, and it is not about order at all — it is about sizing the service for the whole plan rather than for the first thing you happen to do.

- SIZE the service for everything you intend to add, before you build anything. That single decision constrains every later one, and it is the one people get wrong.
- Then let life set the order. A failed furnace, a new car or a kitchen remodel is a legitimate forcing function, and there is no prize for following a theoretical sequence.
- The most expensive mistake is upgrading the service twice — sizing it for a charger, then finding a heat pump does not fit. On an underground service, trenching twice is the same mistake with a bigger number.
- Both federal residential energy credits expired at the end of 2025 — solar and battery, and heat pumps and panel work alike. Advice that assumes either survives is out of date.
The only decision that really has to come first
Almost every question about electrification order is really a question about the service, and the service decision has an unusual property: it is expensive to make twice and nearly free to make well the first time.
A load calculation run against your WHOLE intended plan — the charger, the heat pump, the water heater, the range, the battery, whatever you think you might add — costs nothing extra at the quoting stage. Run against only your immediate upgrade, it produces a service sized to just cover that upgrade, and everything after it becomes a problem. That is the difference between a plan and a sequence of separate decisions.
Note the distinction between SIZING and BUILDING. Sizing the service for the whole plan does not mean rebuilding it today. Frequently the calculation shows the existing service carries the first one or two additions comfortably and only runs out at the third — which usefully defers a large cost without taking any risk, because the decision was made with the full picture in view.
Then let life decide the order
Once the service question is settled, the order of the equipment matters far less than people expect, and the forcing functions are almost always practical:
- A FAILED APPLIANCE — the furnace dies, the water heater goes. This sets the order more often than any other factor and there is no sense resisting it
- A VEHICLE — the car arrives on a date somebody else chose, and the charger follows it
- A REMODEL — a kitchen being rebuilt is the natural and much cheaper moment for induction, because the access and the finishes are already being paid for
- A ROOF — a roof being replaced is the natural moment for solar, for the same reason
- A DEADLINE — an incentive or credit with an expiry does legitimately move things forward, provided the underlying decision was already the right one
None of these is the wrong reason. A sequence driven by what actually happens in a house is a perfectly good sequence, as long as the service was sized against the whole plan rather than against whichever of these came first.
The mistakes that cost the most
In rough order of how expensive they are when they happen:
- UPGRADING THE SERVICE TWICE — sized for the charger, then the heat pump does not fit. The second rebuild costs roughly what the first one did, and the first one's incremental cost to size larger would have been a fraction of it
- TRENCHING TWICE on an underground service — the same mistake with the largest single cost variable attached to it
- OPENING THE SAME WALLS TWICE — routing a circuit through finished work that was open six months earlier for another circuit
- BUYING THE EQUIPMENT BEFORE THE CALCULATION — committing to a specific heat pump or charger, then discovering the service will not carry that model and the deposit is already down
- A PANEL WITH NO SPARE SPACES — cheap to provision during a rebuild, awkward and disruptive to retrofit afterwards

Where solar sits in the order
Solar is the one that genuinely interacts with the others, and it deserves a deliberate decision rather than a default.
The argument for doing it LATER is sizing accuracy. A system sized before you have added the loads it is meant to offset is sized against a guess about your future consumption. Add the heat pump and the charger first and you have real usage data to size against, which tends to produce a better-matched system.
The argument for doing it EARLIER, or at least in the same phase, is shared work. If the roof is being replaced, or the panel is being rebuilt for other reasons, doing solar at the same time avoids duplicating access and interconnection work. We model owned systems, and the electrical side of solar and battery is in-house rather than subcontracted, so the sizing conversation and the service conversation can happen together rather than through an intermediary.
What has changed is the arithmetic rather than the logic. Both federal residential energy credits expired at the end of 2025 — the clean energy credit for solar and battery, and the efficiency credit for heat pumps and panel work. A sequence that usually works
Where nothing is forcing your hand, this order wastes the least:
- LOAD CALCULATION against the entire plan, including things you are only considering
- SERVICE AND PANEL decision made — sized now even if built later, with spare spaces provisioned for the plan
- THE FORCING ITEM, whatever it is: the charger, the heat pump, the failed water heater
- REMAINING APPLIANCES as budget and opportunity allow, each landing on the service that was already sized for it
- SOLAR AND BATTERY once there is real consumption to size against, unless a roof or a panel rebuild pulls it earlier
- ANY WIRING REMEDIATION coordinated with whichever of the above opens walls
The step people skip is the first one, and skipping it is what turns the other five into a series of separate expensive decisions.
Coordination across trades
Worth planning for, because it usually sets the calendar more than the electrical work does. Solar, battery and the electrical side of a generator are in-house for us on a C-10. Heat pumps and other HVAC equipment are shared — we do the panel and the circuit, a C-20 contractor sets the equipment. Water-heater plumbing and gas lines belong to a C-36. When several trades are involved the sequencing question becomes partly a scheduling question, and it is worth having somebody own that explicitly rather than assuming it will resolve itself.
