Electrical troubleshooting in Santa Cruz County

Something stopped working, a breaker keeps tripping, something smells hot — we find the cause and fix it.

02What this is

Electrical troubleshooting is diagnosis. You have a symptom — a breaker that keeps tripping, half a room gone dead, lights that dim when the dryer starts, an outlet that smells faintly hot — and the job is to find the actual cause before anything gets replaced. That distinction is the whole point of the visit. Swapping a breaker without a diagnosis does not fix anything; it just moves the problem somewhere less visible.

How we find it. We start at the panel, because the panel is the one place that can produce a fault anywhere downstream of it: a loose termination, a breaker that no longer trips at its rating, heat discoloration on a bus stab, or a directory that has not matched reality in decades. From there we isolate the affected circuit at a midpoint and work toward the fault rather than replacing devices in sequence and hoping. Measurements are taken with the circuit under load, because a lot of faults — a loose neutral especially — read perfectly fine on a dead circuit and only misbehave when current is actually flowing. Junction boxes and splices get opened and looked at. We keep narrowing until the cause is physically in front of us, and we tell you what we are seeing as we go rather than delivering a verdict at the end.

Why this is harder here than a troubleshooting flowchart suggests. Santa Cruz County housing is layered. A 1940s Westside or Eastside house has been worked on repeatedly by different people over the decades, and the eras are spliced together inside boxes nobody has opened since. Mid-century Live Oak and Soquel tracts have original branch circuits sized for a fraction of today's load. Valley cabins in Felton, Ben Lomond, and Boulder Creek have exterior runs that only fault when it rains. Coastal homes near the water corrode at the exterior devices first. Finding a loose neutral in a house like that takes patience rather than parts. That is the work this visit is set up to do.

Sometimes the diagnosis is bigger than the symptom. If what is actually behind a tripping breaker is cloth-insulated Romex that crumbles when you flex it, aluminum branch wiring, or a panel failing at the bus rather than the breaker, we stop, show you what we found, and quote that as its own piece of work instead of letting a service call quietly become a rewire. Sunrise holds a CSLB C-10 (Electrical) licence, #C10-1097237, so the follow-on work stays in house — panel, service, circuits, devices, all under the same 20-year workmanship warranty. If what you have right now is sparking, smoking, or actively smelling like burning plastic, that is not a troubleshooting visit: stay clear of the equipment and see emergency service. If there is smoke, flame, active arcing, or you suspect a fire, leave the area and call 911 first.

04What's included

Exactly what we handle — and the two things you handle.

Sunrise provides

  • A full look at the panel first — directory checked against what is actually energized, breaker and terminations inspected, interior checked for heat, corrosion, and previous work
  • Circuit tracing and fault isolation on the affected circuit, working outward from the panel rather than guessing at devices
  • Measurements taken with the circuit under load, because loose neutrals and marginal connections read fine on a dead circuit
  • Inspection of the devices, splices, and junction boxes on the circuit, including backstab terminations, which fail after decades of heat cycling
  • The repair itself where the cause is a device, splice, termination, or breaker, with any breaker matched to the panel brand as the UL listing requires
  • A corrected, legible panel directory before we leave, whether or not the fault turned out to be at the panel
  • A written summary of the cause, the fix, and anything else we noticed, plus a permit pulled and inspection coordinated if the recommended repair needs one
Warranty: 20-year workmanship warranty on the repair we install, transferable — see warranty terms · Permits: pulled + inspection coordinated by us, built into the quote · Cleanup: Device covers back on, everything reinstalled, the panel directory corrected and relabeled before we leave, and any access holes we opened recorded in the write-up with their locations. Drywall patching and paint are out of scope, and we tell you before we cut rather than after.

You provide

  • A description of when it happens and what is running at the time — genuinely the most useful diagnostic input we get, and worth writing down each time it happens if the fault is intermittent
  • Access to the panel, the affected rooms, and any attic, crawlspace, or sub-area the circuit runs through
  • Any history you have: past repairs, remodels, additions, or work a previous owner did themselves
05How it works

Start to finish, with real times.

1Gathered when you book

Tell us the symptom

When it happens, what is running when it happens, what changed recently, and whether anything smells or feels hot. Bring as much of that to the booking as you can — with an intermittent fault, a written record of when it actually happens beats guesswork on site.

2First part of the visit

Start at the panel

Directory verified against what is actually energized, breaker and terminations checked, panel interior inspected for heat, corrosion, and previous work. Ruling the panel in or out first is what stops the rest of the visit tracing a circuit whose source has never been checked.

3The bulk of the visit — intermittent faults take longer than dead ones

Divide the circuit and corner the fault

We isolate the circuit at a midpoint and work toward the fault instead of replacing devices in sequence. Readings are taken under load, junction boxes and splices get opened, and we narrow it until the cause is in front of us. You hear what we are finding as we find it.

4The cause, in writing, before we leave

Fix it, or write up the real repair

Device, splice, termination, and breaker repairs are done on the same visit where the part is on the truck. If the cause is the panel, the service, or the branch wiring itself, we stop, show you, and quote that as its own job rather than burying it inside a service call.

06Pricing transparency

Every quote is free. The range depends too much on your home to fake it.

The honest answer is that nobody — including us — knows how long a fault takes to find until it is found, so a single number on this page would be a guess dressed up as transparency. A dead circuit with an accessible junction box is the straightforward case. A breaker that only trips when the weather turns is not, and on that visit the work is reproducing the fault before anything can be repaired. What we can control is that the price is agreed with you before we start, that you hear what we are finding as we go instead of at the end, and that if the diagnosis turns into a much larger repair we stop and quote it separately rather than letting the clock run. Everything below is what actually moves the number on a troubleshooting visit.

What it costs
Quotes are free. The variance on this work is too wide for an honest range — book a free inspection and we’ll give you a real number for your specific home, in writing.
What moves the number
How reproducible the fault is — a permanently dead circuit is far quicker to corner than one that only misbehaves in certain conditions · How many devices, junction boxes, and splices sit on the affected circuit, and how many of them are buried behind finished surfaces · Whether the panel directory is accurate — when it is not, the circuit has to be mapped before it can be traced · Physical access to the run: attics, sub-area crawlspaces, and the hillside foundations common in Aptos, Soquel, and the valley · The wiring era we find — knob and tube, cloth Romex, or aluminum branch circuits each change what a safe repair actually involves · Whether the fix is a device swap, a splice repair, or a new run back to the panel · Coastal corrosion at exterior devices, weatherheads, and outdoor boxes for homes within a few blocks of the water · Whether the recommended repair needs a permit and inspection, which adds a scheduled step after the diagnosis
No hidden fees. Every quote is free and detailed.

09Frequently asked questions

7 questions. Real answers.

Pulled from what we actually hear on quotes and on-site. If yours isn't here, ask us — we'll answer in plain English.

My breaker keeps tripping. Can I just replace the breaker?
Usually the breaker is the one component behaving correctly — it is interrupting a fault or an overload, which is its entire purpose. Replacing it removes the warning without removing the cause. There is also a listing issue: breakers have to match the panel brand they are installed in, so a mismatched replacement is not a legitimate repair regardless of whether it physically clips in. The tripping breaker guide covers the short list of likely causes.
Half my outlets stopped working. What is going on?
Usually it is one of two things: an upstream GFCI receptacle that tripped somewhere you would not think to look — a garage, a bathroom, an exterior wall — or a failed connection at one device that fed everything downstream of it. Backstab terminations, where the conductor is pushed into a hole in the back of the device rather than wrapped under the screw, fail this way after decades of heat cycling.
My lights flicker. Is that dangerous?
It depends on the cause, and some causes are serious. A brief dip when a large motor starts is usually normal load behavior. Flickering that affects multiple circuits, changes with which appliances are running, or comes with lights getting brighter in one part of the house is a possible loose neutral, and that one should be looked at promptly. The flickering lights guide walks through how to tell them apart.
Can you tell me the cause over the phone?
Not honestly, no. We can narrow it — a good description of when the fault appears and what is running at the time rules out a lot before anyone arrives, and it sometimes tells us the visit needs to be scheduled around whatever conditions make the fault show up. But anyone who names the failed part before seeing the circuit is guessing, and you would be paying for the guess.
Will you fix it on the same visit?
Usually, when the cause is a device, a splice, a termination, or a breaker — those are repaired while we are there, provided the part is on the truck. Not when the cause turns out to be the panel, the service entrance, or the branch wiring itself, because that work needs its own quote, and often a permit, an inspection, and PG&E coordination. You will know which of those you have before we leave.
What if the problem turns out to be something much bigger?
We stop and tell you rather than quietly expanding the job. If a tripping breaker is really cloth-insulated Romex that has gone brittle, aluminum branch wiring, or a panel failing at the bus, that gets shown to you and written up as a separate scope with its own quote. You are then free to schedule it, get another opinion, or do nothing. The written findings are yours either way.
Should I book troubleshooting or a whole-home inspection?
If you have one specific symptom, book troubleshooting — it is targeted work on a known problem. If the house has several small oddities at once, or you have just bought it and want to know what you are dealing with, a free whole-home inspection is the better use of a visit. Our inspection guide explains what that visit actually covers.

Want to narrow it down first?

A tripping breaker has a fairly short list of likely causes, and a couple of them you can rule out from the kitchen table before anyone comes out. Read that first if you would rather understand it before booking a visit.

Not sure it is just one thing?

If the house has several small oddities at the same time, a free whole-home inspection is usually the better use of a visit than chasing one symptom. You keep the written report either way.
