Grounding and bonding are the parts of your electrical system you never see working — until a fault happens and they're what carries it safely to earth instead of through the house.
Grounding gives the system its connection to earth: driven ground rods — typically two, spaced apart, driven their full depth — tied to the panel through a grounding electrode conductor. Bonding ties the system's metal together so it can never sit at a different voltage than the ground you're standing on: the interior water pipe where it's metallic, the gas line where code requires it, structural steel where present, and every enclosure and piece of equipment back at the panel.
Older Santa Cruz County homes routinely fall short of current requirements — a single corroded rod, an interrupted water-pipe bond after a re-pipe, or grounding that was fine in 1965 and never touched since. Surge protection is only as good as the ground it dumps to, which is one very practical reason this matters more every year.
Where this fits our other work matters: every main panel job we do is a full service rebuild, and new grounding and bonding to current code is included in it — never an add-on line. This standalone service exists for the other triggers: a flagged home inspection, a re-pipe or remodel that broke a bond, adding equipment at a detached structure, or grounding that fails a diagnostic. Why does grounding actually matter?
It's the safety path. A fault with good grounding trips a breaker in a fraction of a second; a fault without it looks for another way to earth — sometimes through plumbing, sometimes through a person. Bonding keeps every piece of metal in the house at the same potential so there's never a voltage difference to feel. And surge protection — including the whole-house unit on every new panel — can only dump surges into a ground that's actually there.
How do I know if my home's grounding is adequate?
You mostly can't tell by looking, which is the problem. The tells we check: rod condition and count, whether the water-pipe bond survived any re-pipe, gas-line bonding, and measured resistance with a clamp meter. It's part of every free inspection — you get the finding in writing either way.
Is this required by code?
For new work, yes — current code grounding is part of any permitted panel or service project. Existing homes are generally grandfathered until major work triggers an update. That's the honest framing: nobody's forcing you to touch a 1970s electrode system, but every permitted upgrade brings it current, and doing it standalone is cheap insurance if the house has warning signs.
If I'm getting a panel upgrade, do I need this too?
No — it's included. Every main panel job we do is a full service rebuild, and new grounding and bonding to current code is part of that scope by definition. This page exists for the situations where grounding needs attention and the panel doesn't.
What's the deal with tingling faucets?
Treat it as urgent. A tingle from plumbing or an appliance means something is energizing metal that should be bonded to ground — a real shock hazard, not a quirk. Call the main number; emergency calls are answered around the clock and routed to our on-call electrician.
