Electrical panel repair in Santa Cruz County

When repair makes more sense than replacement. We diagnose the issue, fix what's fixable, and tell you honestly when replacement is the smarter call.

02·What this is

Not every panel problem is a replacement. A single failed breaker, a loose neutral, corroded contacts on one circuit — these are repairs, and a repair visit costs a fraction of a new service.

The common repairable failures: one breaker that trips constantly or won't reset (usually the breaker itself, not the panel), a loose neutral or ground connection (tightened, re-torqued to spec, documented), corroded breaker contacts in our coastal air (cleaned or replaced depending on extent), and bus-bar damage limited to one position (sometimes repairable, sometimes the tipping point).

Just as important: we tell you when repair is not the right call. A Federal Pacific or Zinsco panel doesn't get repaired — replacement parts for those brands inherit the same failure modes, so putting money into one is putting money into the problem. Several breakers failing together, visible heat damage or burning at the bus, or an insurance carrier that has flagged the panel — those all point the same direction. When they do, we say so plainly and quote the replacement — which in our area is always a full service rebuild, priced honestly as one project.

Every repair visit ends with a written finding either way. Sometimes the finding is "fixed, here's what it was." Sometimes it's "this panel is at end of life, here's the math." Both are worth having.

04·What's included

Exactly what we handle — and the two things you handle.

Sunrise provides

  • Full panel diagnostic — thermal scan, torque check, circuit-by-circuit inspection
  • Breaker replacement matched to the panel brand (UL listing — never mixed-brand)
  • Re-torque and documentation of loose neutrals or grounds
  • Contact cleaning or replacement where corrosion is limited
  • Written findings report — repair completed, or the replacement case, laid out with numbers
Warranty: 20-year workmanship on repairs we perform · Permits: pulled + inspection coordinated by us, built into the quote · Cleanup: panel closed up, replaced parts hauled away, breaker schedule updated and labeled

You provide

  • Panel access and a rundown of the symptoms you've noticed
  • Any letters from your insurance carrier, if that's what prompted the visit
05·How it works

Start to finish, with real times.

1same-week in most cases

Book a diagnostic visit

Tell us the symptoms when you book. Anything that smells hot, sparks, or trips the main gets triaged as urgent — call rather than book online for those.

2~1 hr

Diagnosis on-site

Thermal scan, torque check, and a circuit-by-circuit look. You get a plain-language explanation of what's failing and whether repair or replacement is the right call.

3often same visit

Repair

Breaker swaps, re-torques, and contact work usually happen on the spot — power down only briefly. Bigger findings get a written quote instead of an improvised fix.

4same day

Findings report

Written report either way: what we found, what we did, what to watch. If replacement is the recommendation, the report includes the reasoning — useful for insurance conversations.

06·Pricing transparency

Every quote is free. The range depends too much on your home to fake it.

Repair pricing starts with the diagnostic visit, and most single-breaker or re-torque fixes are completed within it. What moves the number is what the diagnosis finds — the factors below. When the finding is "replace," we quote that as its own project and the diagnostic cost folds into it.

What it costs
Quotes are free. The variance on this work is too wide for an honest range — book a free inspection and we’ll give you a real number for your specific home, in writing.
What moves the number
Single breaker vs multiple failing breakers · Extent of corrosion (one contact vs panel-wide) · Bus-bar condition — localized damage vs structural · Panel brand and breaker availability (matched-brand only, per the UL listing) · Whether findings point to replacement instead (quoted separately, plainly)
No hidden fees. Every quote is free and detailed.

09·Frequently asked questions

5 questions. Real answers.

Pulled from what we actually hear on quotes and on-site. If yours isn't here, ask us — we'll answer in plain English.

Can you repair a Federal Pacific or Zinsco panel?
We don't recommend it, and in most cases we decline. Replacement breakers for those brands inherit the same documented failure modes — documented testing has found high failure rates in FPE-compatible replacement breakers as well. Repair money spent on an FPE or Zinsco panel is money spent keeping the problem. The FPE guide and Zinsco guide lay out the full story, and we'll flag it clearly if that's what you have.
My breaker keeps tripping — is that the panel's fault?
Usually it's one of three things: an overloaded circuit doing its job, a failing breaker, or a real fault downstream (short or ground fault). The diagnostic sorts out which. A breaker that trips under real load isn't broken — it's telling you the circuit needs help, which is a dedicated-circuit conversation — book a free inspection to scope it — not a repair.
When is repair the wrong call?
FPE or Zinsco brand, multiple breakers failing together, visible heat damage or burning, aluminum bus corrosion beyond one position, or a panel your insurance carrier has flagged. In those cases repair is a patch on a failing system and we say so — the right quote is the replacement, which in our area is always the full service rebuild.
Is a permit needed for a panel repair?
Like-for-like breaker replacement generally doesn't need one; anything touching the service equipment or conductors does, and we pull it when the scope requires. We handle the call either way — it's part of doing the job right.
What if my panel dies at night or on a weekend?
Call the main number. Emergency calls are answered around the clock and routed to our on-call electrician. A dead main or a burning smell at the panel is exactly what that path is for — see the emergency page for what counts.
10·Even if Sunrise isn't the answer

Here’s the honest path — wherever it leads.

We'd rather you get the right outcome than the Sunrise outcome. Some of this points away from us on purpose.

Something urgent right now?

Burning smell, hot panel, dead main — don't wait on a booking form. Emergency calls are answered around the clock and routed to our on-call electrician.

Emergency service

Think your panel might be a known brand issue?

FPE and Zinsco panels have documented failure modes that repair can't fix — the field guides cover identification, risk, and what replacement involves. Outside the county, find a CSLB-licensed C-10 contractor at cslb.ca.gov, and be wary of anyone quoting a full replacement without opening the panel.

Just want eyes on it?

A free whole-home inspection includes the panel — you keep the written report either way. About a third of these end with no work scheduled, and that's fine.
