The CSLB is California's regulatory body for construction contractors. It licenses contractors, defines what work each license classification authorizes, enforces standards, and investigates consumer complaints.
If a contractor works on your home for more than $500 in labor and materials, California law requires them to be licensed by the CSLB. The license number is the single most useful thing you can check before hiring anyone — it tells you what work they're legally allowed to do, whether their license is active, whether they carry workers' comp insurance, and whether they have any complaints on file.

Permit-pulling, insurance requirements, and code enforcement all flow through the CSLB framework. A contractor working without an active license can't legally pull a permit, which means your work won't be inspected, which means it won't be code-compliant, which means it may not pass when you sell the house and may not be covered by insurance if something goes wrong.
