CEC — California Electrical Code
Also known as: California Electrical CodeCCR Title 24 Part 3
The CEC is California's version of the National Electrical Code. California adopts the NEC every three years and adds amendments specific to California — earthquakes, wildfire risk, energy efficiency, solar mandates, and other state-specific concerns. The current edition is the 2025 CEC, which builds on the 2023 NEC with California-specific changes.
A few of the bigger California-specific CEC provisions: solar-ready panel requirements on new construction, more stringent grounding standards in seismically active zones, special rules for outdoor wiring in wildfire-risk areas, and accelerated adoption of safety devices like GFCI and AFCI breakers in more circuits than the NEC requires.
Every electrical permit we pull in Santa Cruz County is inspected against the CEC, not the unamended NEC. A contractor who's only familiar with national-level code can miss California-specific requirements and fail inspection.
