A home battery stores electricity and gives it back when you need it. When the grid goes down, it takes over — usually fast enough that you notice the lights flicker rather than go out — and it runs your house from stored power until it's empty or the grid comes back.

The question everyone asks first is how long it lasts, and the honest answer is that it depends entirely on what you're running, not on the number on the box. A battery carrying a fridge, your internet, some lights and phone charging will last a great deal longer than the same battery trying to run air conditioning and an electric dryer. This is why the first thing we do is ask what actually has to stay on — that list, not the house's square footage, is what sizing is built from.

You do not need solar to have a battery. It's less common, but it's a real and sensible thing to do: the battery charges from the grid when power is cheap or simply when it's available, and holds that charge for an outage. If you do have solar, the battery does a second job on top of backup — it stores your own production so you can use it yourself in the evening instead of exporting it, which under NEM 3.0 is the difference between getting retail value for your power and getting the utility's much lower avoided-cost credit.

We're a C-10 electrical contractor, and the battery is only part of what makes this work. The interconnection, the transfer equipment, and whether your existing panel can take any of it are electrical questions — and they're where these projects actually go wrong.

Drywall and paint repair where equipment was mounted is out of scope — we say so at quote rather than after.

A tech looks at your panel, your service, and where the equipment could physically go, then works through what you actually want running when the power is out. That list is the whole design — it decides how many units you need and whether you're backing up the whole house or a critical-loads subpanel. You get a written report and a real number.

Permit and utility interconnection

We pull the building permit and file the interconnection application with PG&E. The paperwork is usually the long pole, not the labour — timelines vary across the county, and we tell you the realistic date rather than the optimistic one.

Equipment mounted and interconnected, any subpanel work done, conduit run and labelled. Your power is off for part of the day while we work at the service — we tell you which part in advance so you can plan around it.

Every quote is free. The range depends too much on your home to fake it.

We give you a real number at the free inspection rather than a range on a web page. Battery projects vary more than most electrical work — what you want backed up, where the equipment can physically go, how far it is from your panel, and whether your service can take it as-is are each large enough to move the total on their own. One thing to get straight before you budget: there is no federal tax credit on home battery storage for 2026 installs. Section 25D — the 30% residential credit that covered owned solar and standalone storage — terminated on 31 December 2025. If a quote or an article you're reading still assumes it, that assumption is out of date, and we'd rather you hear it from us than at tax time.

How long will a battery run my house?
It depends on what you're running, which is why nobody honest gives you a single number up front. Lights, fridge, internet and phones is a very different load from air conditioning, an electric dryer, or an EV charging. At the inspection we go through what has to stay on, and size from that — sometimes the right answer is more battery, and sometimes it's the same battery with a critical-loads subpanel so it isn't trying to carry the whole house.
Do I need solar to have a battery?
No. It's less common, but installing a battery with no solar is a real thing we do. Without solar the battery charges from the grid and sits ready for an outage — pure resilience. With solar it does that and stores your own daytime production for evening use, which is what makes solar pencil under NEM 3.0. If you have no solar and no plans for it, a battery still does the backup job perfectly well.
Battery or generator?
Duration is the dividing line. A battery is silent, needs no fuel, requires nothing from you, and covers the outages most of this county actually gets. A generator keeps going as long as it has gas, which is what you want in a PSPS zone where a shutoff can last days, or if you're on a well. Batteries also earn their keep every day when paired with solar; a generator only does anything during an outage. Some homes are best served by both. Whole-home backup or just some circuits?
Whole-home backup means the battery carries everything, which needs enough capacity to handle whatever anyone switches on. A critical-loads subpanel means we move the circuits that matter — fridge, internet, some lights and outlets, well pump, medical equipment — onto their own panel that the battery backs up, and everything else simply goes dark. The subpanel approach is often the better value, and it removes the risk of someone running the dryer during an outage and flattening your reserve.
Is there still a tax credit for battery storage?
No, not for 2026 installs. Section 25D — the 30% federal residential credit that covered owned solar and standalone battery storage — terminated on 31 December 2025 under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. A great deal of material online still assumes it exists. It doesn't, and we'd rather tell you now than have you find out when you file.
Which brand should I get?
FranklinWH, hands down. It's the battery brand we prefer to install. We're also certified on Tesla and Generac, but FranklinWH is our first choice.
How long does the whole process take?
The install is one to two days. The calendar is longer — permits and the PG&E interconnection typically put a project at several weeks from signed quote to permission-to-operate, and that varies by jurisdiction across the county. We give you the realistic date at quote, not the optimistic one.

Look for a CSLB-licensed C-10 contractor who is a certified installer for the system you're considering — certification is what governs warranty registration and parts access. Verify the licence at cslb.ca.gov, and check the quote includes the permit, the utility interconnection, and any panel work rather than adding them later.

If you're in a PSPS zone, on a well, or need backup for days rather than hours, a standby generator may be the more honest answer. It's noisier and needs fuel, but duration is where it wins outright.
