02What this is

A hot tub or spa circuit is a dedicated 240V run from your electrical panel out to the spa pad, with GFCI protection, a disconnect within sight of the tub, and bonding where the code calls for it. Fifty amps is the common size for a portable spa, but the number that matters is on the equipment nameplate. We read the plate and the manufacturer's instructions before we size a breaker or pull a wire.

The disconnect is the part homeowners are usually surprised by. Code requires a way to cut power to the spa that is readily reachable, within sight of the tub, and set back from the water by the required distance — so nobody has to reach across the water or walk back into the house to shut it off. On most jobs that is a weatherproof outdoor enclosure holding the GFCI breaker and serving as the disconnect in one box. It is not optional, and an inspector will look for it.

Bonding is the other piece. Metal near the spa that a wet person could touch gets tied together so everything sits at the same electrical potential. Self-contained portable spas that are listed for it already carry some of that inside the cabinet. Which parts still need bonding on your install depends on the unit and on the deck or pad it sits on, so we confirm it against the listing rather than guessing.

Two Santa Cruz County realities shape most of these jobs. First, panel capacity: a spa is a large 240V load, and plenty of county homes are still on a 100A service already carrying a range and a dryer. Run the Panel Load Calculator or have a tech check it in person — sometimes the honest answer is that the spa circuit waits behind a 200A service upgrade. Second, weather: a spa circuit lives outdoors year-round, and within a few blocks of the water the enclosures, fasteners, and fittings have to be chosen for salt air or they will not last.

04What's included

Exactly what we handle — and the two things you handle.

Sunrise provides

  • A dedicated 240V circuit sized off the spa's nameplate and the manufacturer's instructions, with conductor size accounting for the length of the run
  • GFCI protection for the spa circuit, plus a weatherproof outdoor disconnect within sight of the tub and set back from the water as code requires
  • Bonding of the metal parts the code and the spa's listing call for, verified before we call for inspection
  • The physical run — conduit, trench, crawl space, or an under-deck route — with weathertight penetrations wherever we pass through the building envelope
  • A new breaker landed in your existing panel and matched to that panel's brand, so its listing stays intact (Siemens is what we install by default when the panel itself is ours)
  • Corrosion-resistant enclosures, fasteners, and fittings on installs near the water
  • Permit pulled and inspection coordinated, built into the quote rather than added at the end
Warranty: 20-year workmanship warranty, transferable — see warranty terms · Permits: pulled + inspection coordinated by us, built into the quote · Cleanup: Trench backfilled and tamped, drop cloths inside, conduit offcuts and packaging hauled away. We seal what we penetrate so it stays weathertight. Deck board replacement, stucco patching, and drywall finish work are out of scope — we will point you to someone.

You provide

  • The spa's installation manual, or a photo of the equipment nameplate, ideally before quote day
  • The tub in its final position, or a settled decision on where the pad is going
  • Access to the panel and to the route between the panel and the spa on the work day
05How it works

Start to finish, with real times.

1On site before anything is quoted

Free on-site inspection

A tech reads the spa nameplate, checks your panel for capacity and an open slot, and walks the route from the panel to the pad. You get a written scope and a real quote. If the service cannot carry the spa, you hear that here rather than after the trench is open.

2Scheduled around your spa delivery

Permit + scheduling

We pull the electrical permit with the right authority — the County building department for most unincorporated addresses, the city only in Santa Cruz, Capitola, Scotts Valley, and Watsonville — and book the install around your delivery date.

3Install window confirmed in your written scope

Install day

Breaker into the panel, conduit or trench along the route, weatherproof disconnect set near the pad, terminations at the spa, and bonding completed. Power is off only while we are working inside the panel.

4Before we leave

Inspection + walkthrough

The inspector signs off the circuit, then we show you the disconnect, test the GFCI with you standing there, label the breaker, and hand over the permit number and sign-off with the invoice.

06Pricing transparency

Every quote is free. The range depends too much on your home to fake it.

There is no flat price for a spa circuit, because almost none of the cost is the breaker. It is the run: how far the spa sits from the panel, and what the wire has to cross to get there — an open side yard, a trench under a paved path, a crawl space, or the underside of a deck. Two houses on the same street can land far apart on that alone. The second variable is your panel. If there is no room or no capacity, the honest quote includes that work, and the Panel Load Calculator will usually tell you which of those two conversations you are about to have. We look at all of it on site and give you the number in writing. Quotes are free either way.

What it costs
Quotes are free. The variance on this work is too wide for an honest range — book a free inspection and we’ll give you a real number for your specific home, in writing.
What moves the number
Distance from the panel to the spa pad, and whether conductors have to be upsized for voltage drop on a long run · Route difficulty — an open side yard versus trenching, a crawl space, a hillside bench, or a run under an existing deck · Hard surfaces in the path: a concrete walk, pavers, or a driveway that has to be crossed or cut · Panel capacity and open slots — whether the spa circuit lands in the existing service, or has to wait behind a subpanel or a service upgrade · Coastal corrosion zone — enclosures, fasteners, and fittings selected for salt air on installs near the water · The spa's own nameplate rating, which sets the breaker and conductor size · Permit fees, set by whichever authority covers your address — the County for unincorporated Soquel, Aptos, and Live Oak, the city itself in Santa Cruz, Capitola, Scotts Valley, and Watsonville · Whether an existing spa circuit can be partly reused, or has to be replaced end to end because of buried splices or missing GFCI protection
No hidden fees. Every quote is free and detailed.

09Frequently asked questions

7 questions. Real answers.

Pulled from what we actually hear on quotes and on-site. If yours isn't here, ask us — we'll answer in plain English.

Does a hot tub really need its own circuit?
Yes. A spa heater plus its pumps is a large 240V load, and it needs a dedicated circuit with GFCI protection. Sharing it with anything else is both a code problem and a nuisance-tripping problem. A tub running on an extension cord or a repurposed receptacle is the single most common thing we get called out to correct.
Why do I need a disconnect if the breaker is already in the panel?
So power can be cut at the tub. Code requires a shutoff that is readily reachable and within sight of the spa, set back from the water by the required distance, rather than one that is inside the house. On most jobs the outdoor GFCI enclosure serves as that disconnect.
My spa GFCI keeps tripping. Is that the circuit or the tub?
It can be either. A GFCI that trips when the heater and pumps run together often points at moisture in the tub's equipment bay or a failing heater element rather than the wiring — but damaged conductors, a buried splice, or water sitting in an outdoor enclosure will do it too. We test the circuit first, because that is the cheaper thing to rule out. Why breakers trip covers the general pattern.
Can I dig the trench myself to save money?
Sometimes, and it is worth asking about at quote. Depth, backfill, and what the conduit is protected by all get inspected, so if you dig it we will tell you exactly what the trench has to look like. We would much rather walk the route with you before you start than after.
Do I need a permit for a hot tub circuit?
Yes, and we pull it. A new 240V circuit is permitted, inspected work. For most addresses in the county that goes through the County building department; Santa Cruz, Capitola, Scotts Valley, and Watsonville run their own. What to expect at inspection walks through the process.
Will my 100A panel handle a spa?
It depends what else is on it. A spa on top of an electric range, a dryer, and an EV charger is usually where a 100A service runs out. Run the Panel Load Calculator for a real answer on your home, or have a tech verify it during the free inspection. Sometimes the outcome is that a 200A upgrade comes first.
How long is the warranty?
20-year workmanship warranty on the install, transferable to the next homeowner. See warranty terms for the full coverage details. The spa itself carries the manufacturer's own warranty.
10Even if Sunrise isn't the answer

Here’s the honest path — wherever it leads.

We'd rather you get the right outcome than the Sunrise outcome. Some of this points away from us on purpose.

Outside Santa Cruz County?

Look for a CSLB-licensed C-10 contractor near you and verify the number at cslb.ca.gov. Ask for liability and workers-comp proof, and ask whether the quote includes the permit, the disconnect, and the bonding — those are the three line items worth confirming in writing.
