A T&P valve is the safety device on every water heater that releases water if the tank's internal temperature or pressure exceeds safe limits. Without one, a malfunctioning water heater could rupture or explode. T&P valves are required by code on every residential water heater.
When you install a heat pump water heater (HPWH), the T&P valve and its discharge line are part of the install scope — but the plumbing scope, not the electrical scope. Your plumber installs the HPWH; we install the electrical circuit feeding it. The T&P valve is plumbing.
Mentioning T&P here because customers sometimes ask whether the HPWH install includes "everything." It includes the plumbing-side scope (T&P, discharge, water supply) plus the electrical-side scope (circuit, disconnect). Two contractors, two scopes. Both inspected.
