A smart panel is a circuit breaker panel with software-driven circuit-level monitoring and remote control. Common brands include Span and Lumin. You can see real-time power use per circuit from a phone app, turn individual circuits on or off remotely, and set up automation rules (e.g., "if grid power is out, automatically turn off the dryer and EV charger to preserve battery capacity for refrigerator and lights").
Smart panels are a relatively new product category and they're not for everyone. The strongest use case is a home with battery backup — the smart panel can actively manage which loads draw from the battery during an outage, extending runtime significantly. For homes without battery backup, the value proposition is mostly monitoring + convenience.
We don't push smart panels. They cost meaningfully more than standard panels, have software dependency, and the killer feature only matters if you have battery backup. If you do have or plan to have battery backup AND you're already replacing the panel, a smart panel is worth a serious look. Otherwise, a standard panel is fine.
